Interferon alpha
Interferon - interfering with viral replication

Interferon was the first immune competent glycoprotein to be discovered -in the late 1950's by Isaacs & Lindemann. The team noticed that cells that had been infected with a virus, secreted a glycoprotein which interfered with viral replication, hence they named it interfere-on. It is now known that interferons are produced by a diversity of cells in response to infection, immune stimulation or chemical induction.
Homeopathic Use

Many of the side effects of allopathic dose interferon are the symptoms typical of viral infections and it is this along with the proving by Dr Souk-Aloun that has led to its use in homeopathy. It is used effectively to treat patients susceptible to shingles, Human Papilloma virus, as well as warts and Chlamydia infections
 Interferon alpha proving

Dr P. Souk -Aloun has proved interferon alpha 30CH on 15 volunteers randomised against placebo. In his introduction to the proving, Dr Souk-Aloun, summarises the work of American psychiatrist Frank Adams who assessed the psychological effects of Interferon alpha on 10 patients being treated with the drug for cancer. He also quotes the early work of Drs Jenaer & Marichal on the use of Interferon and Cyclosporin in the treatment of auto-immune disease and AIDS.
Side effects of allopathic interferon alpha
Flu-like symptoms with fever and intense fatigue, arthralgia and cold sweats are the commonest side effects all of which are typical of chronic fatigue and lingering or recurrent viral infections in patients. On a biochemical level neutropenia and thrombopenia can be evident side effects, again these are typically found in chronic and acute viral infections

 USE IN GENERAL PRACTICE
ARTH formula and Inflammation By Dr Bernard Marichal
Extract from the International Institute of Micro-Immunotherapy Contact review Autumn 2000

Osteoarthritis results from a lack of equilibrium between the anabolicand catabolic functioning of the cartilage of the joints and not as a single consequence of the `wear and tear' of age as was believed for a long time. The role of the cytokines (IL1, TNF alpha IL6 etc.) is nevertheless understood - they favour the secretion of the enzymes responsible for cartilage destruction.  The ARTH formula when prescribed at 2 to 3 capsules per day for about a month is effective in treating an ACUTE inflammatory attack typical of Osteoarthritis.Treatment of tendonitis has given fast results (10 to 15 days) with a prescription of 2 to 4 capsules per day, then followed by one per day until complete disappearance of symptoms.
The most important thing that distinguishes ARTH treatment from others is that it doesn't have secondary gastro-intestinal problems. It has also been shown to reduce the need for NSAID's.
 Tendinitis of Achilles Tendon
Extract from the International Institute of Micro-Immunotherapy Contact Review Spring 2001
A 49 year old teacher consulted in the Autumn of 2000 with tendonitis of his Achilles Tendon, which had started two weeks earlier. He showed local spontaneous pain and pain in response to pressure along the path of the posterior tibial nerve. He experienced this mainly when running or going down stairs. The pain scored 7 out of 10 on a visual analogue scale. This was the first time the patient had experienced this problem. ARTH homeopathic preparation was administered at 2 capsules per day for 2 weeks. The patient was then seen again and had completely recovered. The physician concluded that this was " a surprisingly good outcome".
The ARTH formula is made up of high dilutions of Interleukins, TNF alpha and specific nucleic acids, the inhibitory effects of which address the root of the inflammation problem.
ARTH anti-inflammatory out for testing by Harley Street Osteopath

Osteopaths generally agree that, where appropriate, safe and effective alternatives to the prolonged use of NSAID's would be preferable for their patients' wellbeing. Peter Bartlett is an osteopath and naturopath working in Harley Street - he is a strong believer in the integrated medical approach, regularly combining complementary treatments such as homeopathy, flower essences and nutrition with more orthodox therapy. He is currently testing out the ARTH (SNA's & Interleukins) formula and will hopefully have some interesting results for discussion at our March 2004 seminar.
 Period Pain
  Germany April 2000
Period pain can be extremely debilitating for patients. Dr J.O. in Germany had a case of an 18 year old patient who had complained for a number of years of dysmenorrhoea each month at the start of her period. The usual anti-inflammatory treatments were prescribed and the patient systematically had to resort to self medication of strong doses of paracetamol during acute attacks of severe pain. ARTH was used tentatively by the doctor as period pain is not an immediate obvious indication for the formula. He prescribed 4 capsules per day from the moment the period started until the end. The patient has virtually dispensed with all conventional analgesics.
 Period Pain Update
Since the case above other European doctors have been using ARTH regularly for period pain to great effect. Some doctors prescribe 1- 2 capsules per day from mid cycle / ovulation through to the end of the period and find this to be most effective.

Interleukin 2 - encourages lymphocytes to proliferate. Can allopathic dose side effects constitute an accidental proving?
